Good day Ms. Crystal Rodwell,
As you ride on the Metro North today, I’ll like to tell you a little about myself. Starting at a personal level, I am a second semester freshman student. I am known as a student, mother and worker, therefore, my life is stressful and I am never at rest. Yet, every late night and early morning is a sacrifice that is worth it in the long run. One of the biggest goal I have is to show my daughter that anything is possible and to never give up.
Now that you know a little bit about my personal life, here is a bit about my academic life. I intend to major in Civil Engineering because it amazes me the work civil engineers do and their contributions to society. Aero Engineering I have recently learned about, yet, this field also excites me to further educate myself. If it was available in the school that would be an option I would like to major in because anything that has to do with space is awesome to me and makes me eager to learn more about. I wasn’t always interested in this field of engineering but I grew passion for the career path after realizing that I am problem solver and enjoy solving problems. But, I also like to eat a lot which is why at some point I wanted to be a food critic from the food channel. My mother, before she passed away, encouraged my decision of becoming an engineer and knew I would be excellent in this field of work.
Since being an engineer isn’t easy to become, I have set many goals for myself. Short term goals include attending all my classes and passing all my courses with a minimum of a (B+). My intentions however, are always to succeed higher. My long term goals, on the other hand, are much more complex in some terms such as being accepted to the school of engineering and being able to manage being a full time mom and student. Graduating college, is on the top of my list, following, becoming an engineer and having a safe home and daughter. There are many obstacles in my way and reasons why I should change my major, to make my life easier -according to others. Yet, I won’t let a challenge or having things a little harder to stop me from completing my dreams. This is one important thing you should know about me, I am not a quitter.
When many people hear engineer they think of, “math and science, oh dear”. However, the job of an engineer is more than math and science. Engineering no matter the field is very important to the world, they solve the everyday problem. For example, civil engineers calculate how buildings won’t collapse. Biomedical engineers are minds of finding cures and medicine for the people. Engineers have the ability to problem solve and think outside of the box. These types of minds make history for their contribution to our world. Problems everyday are solved by engineers. Our basic problems such as getting to class are solved, with help of escalators and elevators. During the age of the renaissance, artistic people are best known, yet, during this time engineers were beginning to blossom. Such as constructing domes.
To end our lovely get together, I would like you to know that I am excited to be in your class and have a step further into the world of engineers. And enjoy the rest of your trip (if you were on the train).
Sincerely, Angilica Burgos
